FINDING BREAD AND BUTTER
My name is Adithya. I am from a small village in a hilly area. Many politicians don’t even know that our village exists in maps except during the time of Elections. So, it is underdeveloped when it comes to infrastructure, education, health, and other sectors. Many residents here don’t even know anything about technology and what’s happening in this world. Like many other Indian families, my parents are also so happy when I was born. There hope is that I would bring brightness in our lives. I have a one-year elder sister named “Kartika”. She is a good and kind-hearted, she supports me in even decision of my life.
As time passes, the problems in my village also got worse. Most of our villagers mainly depend upon agriculture, if we had a good crop that year will be good, or else it would be vice versa. People don’t even have any other jobs other than agriculture. Some people work daily with some rich and middle-class people in a nearby town. They visit their houses on their weekends. My father knew the importance of education and he would always say that, if I am educated, I can give a better life to the people around me”. I used to reply with a smile when he says that. I used to go to a nearby government school, which is 4 miles away from our village.
As I grew older, I understood the problems in my village. As a part of my higher education, I moved to a city nearby. This cost my sister’s education; she discontinued her studies to help my parents in farming activities. She used to send me money every month with a letter describing the situation at my house. In a month, I realized that I cannot survive in the city with the money that my sister is sending. I used to work part-time without letting my parents know about the same. Most of the time, I am unable to focus on my studies along with my work.
After a few months, due to heavy floods, the crops were damaged and there was no income to many farmers in my hometown. My family too suffered the same. My sister sent me a letter with a note to come back as she can’t send the money further as the situation is not good enough to handle. I left for my hometown. My sister explained everything that’s happening in the village. I felt miserably bad and I decided to stay back and help my father. But my father didn’t allow me to do so, he insisted me to go back and complete my education.
He would say,” If u want to change our lives, it’s not going to happen with what we are having here”. I understood what he meant by that. I requested my sister to update me regularly about the situation and left from there. Upon seeing the situation at home, I decided not to take money from home. I lied to them that I am having a job in town, which I can do along with my studies. Time has become hard for me; I am unable to find proper jobs to fund my education along with my daily needs.
Most of the time, a situation occurs where to fulfill one need, I need to compromise on others. Hard times started where I used to sleep with an empty stomach. Life started pulling me towards the darker side. I managed to appear for exams and completed my graduation. I am in a situation, where I cannot afford my travel expenses to go home. I dreamed of going back home with a job and taking care of my family.
I haven’t heard from my sister for few months, later when I went to post a letter by myself, I came to know that the post office located nearby our place is closed and moved to another location, due to inactivity in our area. The only connection with me and my family is now lost. I miss my family a lot especially my mother. Whenever I sleep with an empty stomach, I remember my childhood, where I used to sleep on my mother’s lap. This thought would comfort me and have a painless sleep in my stomach.
Like any other day, I left my room in search of my job with my certificates. I put my left-over money in my wallet, which would help me to commute within the city for two more days. I had to work somewhere after coming back to the room.
I was rejected in the interview on several grounds because of my communication skills, background, my appearance, lack of knowledge in the present technology, etc. Some offered me a job at a very low salary which to do that I need to borrow some extra money, as the timings of the job and location are not within the city. It was a bad day and was waiting at the bus stop in a completely knocked down situation, as I didn’t have lunch that day. I lied my back in a seat at the bus shelter comforting myself. Then suddenly one person snatched my file and started running.
I chased him as fast as can, soon I realized that I am surrounded in his place. I was hit from the back and I fell. Two people checked my pockets and took my wallet. The other person checked my file by throwing all the papers down. He realized there’s nothing in that and threw that file on me. The three of them started hitting me shouting “useless fellow, waste of time”. They left from there taking away my wallet. I slowly got up and erased the dirt on my clothes. I picked up my documents and put them in my file. I moved towards a nearby tap and drank some water. I started walking slowly to my room for an hour. I was completely tired and exhausted. I reached my room, cleaned my wounds with water. As I am hungry, I fell sick and fell on the floor unconsciously adding another night’s sleep with my empty stomach.
