The Rise of Evil (Chapter 3)

UNWANTED CHANGES

I don’t remember what happened to me last night, every visual seems to be blurred and I became unconscious. I woke up so late the next day and I am hungry. I took a bath and went to a nearby temple so that I can get “prasad “offered by the devotes to God. I went there and stood in line and waited for my turn. When my turn came, I asked for some more lying to them that I had a disabled sister at home. They believed and gave me some more.

I ate what I got sitting at the corner of the temple watching people passing by. I wondered there are several sets of people coming there, like poor like me come to ask for something to live on, middle-class people come asking for something that makes them rich, Rich Comes to ask for something which makes him even richer or for something that retains his position. One thing in common for all of these people is all offer something in return to god for getting their wishes to come true, which varies from person to person.

Some people think that helping someone in need is nothing but worshipping God. It is because of those people; I am managing my life till now. I left the temple thinking about what to do next. While leaving I saw the advertisement regarding “free meal” offered by that temple committee in the same week. So, I decided to eat there till I find some job on my own. I went back to the room and slept for a while as I am too weak. The next day, I went back to the temple to eat. At the end of my meal, I asked them whether can I take some food parcel to my home repeating the same lie I said earlier.

I continued the same for three days, one of the members of that temple noticed me and he approached me. He doubted me and he said that he wants to visit my room and meet my sister. I got scared as I got caught. I said ok and asked him to follow me. I don’t know what I am doing or what happens next. He followed me to the room and after we reached our room, I opened the door. He saw no one there and asked me about my sister. I turned towards him and pleaded to excuse me and I agreed that I lied. He asked me for the reason and then I explained everything that happened to me.

He asked me how am I affording to pay rent when I can’t afford food. I replied I take private tuition to the house owner kids. As my fees, he allowed me to stay here in this small room. He inquired about my academics and then believed me. He offered me a job in the temple as a part-time bookkeeper of temples accounts with one meal a day. I was so moved by his gesture and I thanked him. I am so happy that day and was thinking about how I continue my career. I worked under him for a few months, he was impressed by work. One day he bought a scholarship application form and asked me to fill it. He said that he knew a trust which provides financial assistance to students who need it and he said that he would try hard that my application gets approved.

I did what he asked me to do. In two months, my scholarship got approved and went rushing towards him to thank him. He felt so happy and he said that I deserve it. I am in tears and I remembered my family, especially my father who will be very happy when he heard about this. I asked him that I will leave the city and visit my parents as I didn’t hear from them for so long. He agreed for that. I got a few things that my sister asked me earlier and purchased a small mobile so that I can communicate with them more frequently.

I am very excited to see them and tell the things that happen to me. After thirty hours of the hectic journey via train, road and walk, I reached my village. I started walking through the streets towards my house. As I moved forward, I found many people gathered at my place. With a lot of tension in my eyes, I rushed towards my house. Then, I saw few people getting down my father, who hung himself to the tree. My mind stopped working, as it cannot process the fact what my eyes are seeing. My feet stopped running and I am on my knees.
